Vroni was my first apprentice. Luca is currently my seventh apprentice. I remember very clearly how I became a trainer about 10 years ago. I was visited by a nice gentleman from the Chamber of Crafts, who tried to talk me into it. He suggested that I—a photographer without a master craftsman’s certificate—take a look at my studio, my portfolio, and my list of references. Afterward, he wanted me to explain why I didn’t consider it necessary to pass on the profession of photography at my level of expertise…
Busted!
No, seven apprentices in 10 years isn’t many, and it was never meant to be a large number. Why should it be? I’ve always chosen those who were truly committed to the craft—or those who could convince me. Long-standing friendships have developed, and until recently, we’d regularly hold belated Christmas parties together.
There isn’t a single one of them I wish I hadn’t met. I’m very fond of all of them and am glad we spent 2.5–3 years together. We worked, laughed, and sometimes even cried a little. They’ve all become good photographers, even if they went on to study further after earning their journeyman’s certificate.
Well, and then there was Moritz. Actually, I didn’t want to take on an apprentice. Somehow, he talked me into it over the phone, so I invited him in and then signed an apprenticeship contract with him. It wasn’t always easy between us, but Moritz has also grown very dear to my heart. Yes, I’m very proud of his 1.0 grade, and no, he doesn’t have me to thank for it. You don’t “make” a national champion—you become one. Through talent, determination, and the ability to pay close attention. Asking questions is certainly one of Moritz’s greatest strengths.
Best of luck, but above all, much fulfillment in your future

Photography has been a part of my life for over 35 years—as a profession, a passion, and a way of life.
I live and work in Kaufbeuren/Bavaria, and Genoa/Liguria, where light and encounters inspire me again and again.
My pictures are about authenticity, atmosphere, and the moment in between when stories emerge.
